Riverside Home, Shaldon
This Devon garden has showstopping views across the River Teign and a beautifully renovated home which was not being celebrated by the surrounding gardens. Before we started, there was harsh red brick paving for as far as the eye could see and disjointed pathways leading visitors astray. Seating areas were exposed to the unapologetic coastal winds and the more sheltered areas were overtaken with concrete.
The major redesign was inspired by the landscape, playing on the patchwork of fields and meandering river which the garden overlooks. Curved paths gently guide visitors around the garden to sheltered terraces, dining areas, a sunken seat and a water feature. Seating areas are now sheltered by voluminous planting whilst framing those all-important views. Clay pavers, oak sleepers and pea shingle work with the coastal setting and are punctuated with beautiful planting pockets.
Planting is in the cottage style with contemporary moments and all plants were carefully chosen to be robust enough to withstand the coastal setting.
